Dinghy Sailing Event Updates

There are some dinghy events that have been added, and one that has been changed. Firstly, with the sailing club bar opening again, Friendly Friday events have been added to the calendar. The best way to find out if anyone is going out on the water dinghy sailing is through the dinghy WhatsApp group. To join the WhatsApp group drop an email with your phone number to dinghiesuk.

Secondly, the Locks combined race day and the Chris Wadham races are going ahead and I will circulate the relevant sailing details as soon as they are available. At the moment all I know for certain is that it will be down harbour racing using the sailing yacht Cruella as the committee boat. Finally Sunset race 2 has been moved to Friday 4th June so as not to clash with a cadet night. The start time for this race has not changed.

Kayak Activities 2021 – First event soon!

The kayak calendar for 2021 is now online. The first event is a Sunset Paddle on Friday 28th May. I hope that as many of you as possible can come along and enjoy a gentle (fingers crossed) paddle in the company of others. If all is well then we should be able to follow it up with a drink in the club bar.

Please sign up for these events via Webcollect.

I will set up a WhatsApp group, look out from an email from Webcollect with the details.

A few bits of local interest from the latest Solent Forum Montly News that may be of interest:

  • The Forum has begun collating information on all the excellent work on seagrass restoration that is happening around the Solent – see: Solent Forum – Solent Seagrass Restoration.
  • In further seagrass news, a total of 16,000 seagrass seed bags and 2,200 seedling bags are being planted by the Ocean Conservation Trust (OCT) as part of the LIFE Recreation ReMEDIES project being led by Natural England. The four-year project aims to plant a total of eight hectares of seagrass meadows – four hectares in Plymouth Sound and four hectares in the Solent Maritime Special Area of Conservation. See: https://oceanconservationtrust.org/englands-largest-seagrass-planting-programme-is-underway-in-plymouth-sound/.
  • You can watch a YouTube video that looks at the use of Advanced Mooring Systems as an alternative to traditional moorings. Experts in the field share more about the designs of these systems as well as their potential to limit the impact of recreational boating on seabed habitat. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmm2gTFuZ2E.
  • The Hants and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust have opened a new marine litter exhibition in the Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery. The exhibition, titled Spiny Seahorses and Ripping Yarns, is the result of a collaboration with local environmental artist, Trudi Lloyd Williams. See: https://www.hiwwt.org.uk/news/spiny-seahorses-and-ripping-yarns.
  • To celebrate World Oceans Day (8 June) the National Oceanography Centre is providing a free digital day of educational talks, hot-topic discussions and virtual tours, which will replace its usual on-site Open Day. Its team of speakers will share their latest science and technology with classrooms and homes across the world. See: https://noc-open-day-2021.vfairs.com/.

Hopefully that’s enough to keep everyone going until next week, although don’t let it stop you getting afloat when the weather is favourable! As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address if you feeling isolated and cut off from the world. It is always nice to hear from members, and any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Stay safe.
